In the year 1889, a time of steel, steam, and locomotives, a man named Hamilton Carhartt ("Ham" to his friends) began producing overalls in a small Detroit loft. Early failures led him to focus on market research, and after speaking directly with railroad workers he designed a product that truly fit their needs. Under the motto, "Honest value for an honest dollar" the Carhartt bib overall was created and, like most of their designs, rapidly evolved into the standard for quality workwear.
